It starts with one flight. Everything after it is a skill tree: 59 steps, each one earning XP and unlocking the next, all the way to flying on your own.
Your first flight, with your hands on the controls from takeoff. Fly an ICON A5 over Puget Sound. It goes in a logbook with your name on it, and it is step one of the tree.
The discovery flight is the root of a 59-step skill tree. Each lesson after it earns XP and unlocks the next: the pattern, water landings, your first solo, a cross-country, the checkride. 24 of those steps need no certificate, no medical and no minimum age; the FAA only enters the picture when you fly alone.
