Nothing above this line needs an FAA certificateEvery step above — including a full Dual Cross-Country and the FAA Knowledge Test — is open to you right now, with no student pilot certificate, no medical, and no minimum age. Your discovery flight needs literally nothing; from lesson two you show a citizenship document once, and gliders and ground school skip even that. That is 24 of 59 steps, 34.0 flight hours and 12,550 XP before you apply for anything. Below the line, the applications and the age chips start.

Discovery Flight

60 minutes. You fly it.

This is the whole pitch: you fly the airplane. Our instructor sits right seat in the Icon A5, and from the moment you push off you have your hand on the stick — taxi, takeoff, a lap around Puget Sound, and a water landing if the conditions cooperate.

It is not a ride. It is lesson one, it goes in a logbook with your name on it, and it counts toward your certificate.
